Goal setting is not only important, but also essential. It is literally our guidebook to life. Not just for our day to day activities, but as pathways to our life vision. It doesn’t mean that we have to be extremely rigid with our time, but we have to have an idea of where are going and what we are supposed to be doing. We use our GPS to get us places, so we need goals to get us where we want to be in life. Entrepreneurs especially need to set business goals if they want to succeed. I help people like you everyday set and be accountable to their goals.
What is a goal?
The definition of a goal is, a desired result a person or a system envisions, plans and commits to achieve. Some people don’t like goal setting as they like to “go with the flow.” That works well for deciding how you are going to spend a Saturday, but it can be daunting to go through life without some goals, especially for the entrepreneur. When you work for someone else the company sets the vision and projections for revenue. You will find you will come into that type of job with predetermined goals that are set for you. You may have flexibility in deciding how you achieve, but ultimately the basic path is set for you. Not so much when you work for yourself.
The most important aspect of goal setting is that it gives you focus. You can keep your eye on the prize. If you know that you are working to get to that next promotion, you will keep making those telephone calls or sending those follow up notes. If you want it badly enough, you won’t stop until you get it. But if you get distracted, taking a look back at why you set the goal in the first place can keep you motivated.
What should you do first?
I challenge you to write down your upcoming goals for the week, and write down why you want to achieve those goals. How will you feel when you achieve? How will you measure your success?
